- 2 door, 2 seater
- Metallic burgundy
- Grey tex interior
- Reasonable boot space
The car has done a genuine 100,000km. A new hood has been fitted and the km speedo (spent first two years in Switzerland) has been replaced with mph speedo. This car has the benefit of a hard top for the cooler times of year and is very easy to drive.
It has a straight six cylinder engine with a four speed automatic gearbox and has reasonable boot space.
The "Pagoda" Mercedes, given the name due to the shape of the hard top, was first introduced in 1963 as the 230SL, with a straight 6, four bearing 2306cc, 150bhp engine. Fuel injection, servo assisted disc brakes, power steering, and automatic all helped towards easy cruising at 100mph. 1966 saw the introduction of 250SL of similar specification with a six bearing 2496cc engine.
The final model of the range, the 280SL was produced from 1967 to 1971, and with 23885 produced proved to be the most popular and best model. Engine size was increased to 2778cc (170bhp) with a seven bearings, giving both a smoother and more powerful drive. Except for suspension and engine the model didn’t really change that much, which shows what a great design the 1963 230SL was. The way the hood stows away giving a really clean look when down, is a key feature of these cars.
